Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to the most common questions from our patients. If we have forgotten any of them, feel free to get in touch.

Why do young women choose oocyte donation?

Egg donation, blood and plasma donation are among the ways to help. Potential donors were also asked about their motivation in a personal interview and the most common responses were:I want to help. There is someone in the immediate vicinity who needs donated eggs to get pregnant or is having trouble getting pregnant. If I help now, it is likely that when I need help, there will be someone else who will be willing to help.

‍How aredonors chosen?

‍Our requirements for potential donors, in addition to all negative tests (blood tests to exclude infectious diseases - HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, genetic tests - karyotype and cystic fibrosis carrier, SMA, blood tests to determine blood group and Rh factor, hormonal examination, gynecological examination) include:

‍Age ofthe woman - between 18 and 35 years of age, BMI - up to 25, at least completed secondary education, absolutely no history of drug use, no history of persistent drug use, no personal and family history of psychiatric disorders and diseases, and no known hereditary diseases.

‍Isdonation anonymous?

Egg donation in the Slovak Republic is mutually anonymous.

‍How doesthe Repromedica clinic match a donor?

‍Our clinic has a wide database of donors and donors and therefore we are able to meet the requirements of the treated couple almost 100%. The more information we receive from the treated couple, the more accurately our team can select a donor.

‍Is itpossible to assign a donor of a different ethnicity at the request of the couple being treated?

The ReproMedica clinic has in its database of oocyte donors also young women - potential donors (citizenship of the Slovak Republic) who are of other ethnicity.

‍When isthe donor selected?

‍A suitable donor is selected 6 weeks before oocyte retrieval.

‍When willI receive information about the donor?

‍You will get information about the donor (such as age and blood type) 2 to 3 weeks before the oocyte retrieval.

‍What is themaximum age of the recipient?

In the Slovak Republic we do not have an age limit for female beneficiaries, it always depends on the individual case.

‍Whois legally the parent of a child born after treatment with donated sperm and donated oocytes?

According to the current legislation, infertility treatment in the Slovak Republic is possible only for heterosexual couples. A woman and a man who have signed an informed consent to treatment legally become the mother and father of the child/children with all parental rights and obligations.

‍Whattests will I have before treatment?

‍For women over 40 years of age, we recommend a mammogram, oncological examination of the uterine cervix, and a gynecologist's recommendation that it is possible to become pregnant. Also, your and your partner's STD tests (sexually transmitted disease tests) no older than 6 months). From you hormone profile, cultures. Your partner's spermogram results.

‍Whatis the first day of menstruation when you spot at the beginning?

Spotting is not taken as the beginning of menstruation. Take the first day of normal (standard) menstrual bleeding as the first day of menstruation; if menstruation starts after 8 p.m., take the next day as the first day of menstruation.

‍How manydays of partner abstinence are best for sperm quality?

3 days of sexual abstinence is recommended, especially to have sufficient volume of ejaculate for processing by the laboratory. Prolonged abstinence is not necessary as this may have a negative effect on sperm morphology.

‍Is itpossible to somehow promote better sperm quality before collection?

Yes, all the influences with which a man has been in contact in the last 3 months before collection are involved in the quality of sperm. Therefore, no special regimen is needed in the short time before ejaculate collection.

When will the embryo transfer be performed?

‍The planning of the embryo transfer is carried out by the doctor in collaboration with the embryologist and the patient. The transfer is normally performed on the 5th day after the donor egg retrieval. You will be informed about the date and time of the embryo transfer by the coordinator.

‍How manyembryos will be transferred?

Usually one, maximum two embryos. We recommend freezing the other good quality embryos.

‍What should be thequality of the embryos on each day?

The quality of embryos can be assessed from the second day of their development. A two-day-old embryo should preferably have 3-4 cells. A three-day-old embryo then has 6-8 cells. On the fourth day of development the embryo becomes a morula and the lowest success rate has been observed (via Embryoscope), for this reason embryo transfer is performed on day 5 of development when the embryo becomes a blastocyst.

What shouldI bring to the embryo transfer?

You do not need to bring anything special to the embryo transfer.Bring all signed consents to your treatment and, if you wish to freeze unused embryos, a signed consent to freeze the embryos.

‍Should Ihave a full bladder before the transfer?

‍It is not necessary to have an extremely full bladder for embryo transfer. We recommend not going to the toilet to empty the bladder just before the embryo transfer. A moderately filled bladder helps to strain the uterus and thus facilitates the introduction of the embryos into the uterus.

‍Howlong does the transfer itself take?

Uncomplicated transfer takes 2 - 3 minutes. After the transfer, you will stay lying still for about 10 - 15minutes. Then you can go home.

Can apartner be present during the transfer?

‍The presence of a partner during the embryo transfer is possible.

Do I have to lie in bed after the transfer?

‍After embryo transfer, complete rest is not necessary. A normal daily routine is recommended with limitation of stressors such as physically demanding sports or heavy manual labor. Incapacity for work is not necessary.

‍Whencan I travel home after my transfer?

‍After embryo transfer, there is no restriction on travel. Usually, patients travel home by all means of transport on the day of embryo transfer, the next day at the latest.

‍When doembryos nest in the uterus?

The embryos usually become embedded (nidate) in the uterine lining on the 6th-8th day after fertilization, i.e. in the next 24-48 hours after embryo transfer.

‍I've startedspotting, is that normal?

‍Spotting may occur within 10 days after embryo transfer. Thismay be due to minor injuries to the cervix during the transfer and further to subsequent embryo nesting. This spotting has no effect on the results of treatment. Heavy or prolonged bleeding should be discussed with your doctor.

‍Do I have tokeep taking all my medicines?

Yes, continue taking all the medicines you were taking before the embryo transfer.

‍When shouldI take the test?

14 days after the transfer, it is important to have an HCG test (from the blood) done by a doctor.

‍To evaluate your unsuccessful treatment and determine your next treatment strategy, make an appointment with the doctor who created your treatment plan within 10-14 days.

‍Should Ikeep taking my medication?

‍If you have a negative pregnancy test, you can discontinue all medications at once. The only exception is taking Prednisone at a dose above 10 mg (2tbl) daily. Talk to the doctor who prescribed it to you about how to phase it out.
