Couple with two children

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), an infertile couple can be considered a couple that has not achieved pregnancy within one year of regular unprotected intercourse. It is not correct to speak of infertility of the woman and infertility of the man. It is always necessary to speak of the infertility of a couple, since only together they form a unique biological unit and the possibility of having a child is determined by a large number of factors on the part of both partners.

Statistically speaking, the cause of infertility in a couple is 30% female, 30% male. The cause on the part of both partners is in 15-30% and in 10-15% it is not possible to diagnose the specific cause of infertility. This is idiopathic (unexplained) sterility. Therefore, it is understandable that the search for the causes of infertility and their treatment are a joint concern of the married/partner couple.

WOMAN - the most common gynecological diseases as causes of infertility

  • tubal factor (obstruction or impairment of fallopian tube function)
  • uterine factor (endometrial inflammation and uterine fibroids)
  • congenital developmental defects of the genital organs
  • endometriosis (uterine lining located outside the uterine cavity, most commonly in the pelvis and ovaries)
  • hormonal factor (diseases of the endocrine glands, which are also manifested by sterility)
  • genetic factor (genetic disorder)
  • immunological factor (production of various antibodies, e.g. against sperm, eggs or embryos)

MAN - the most common causes of infertility

  • spermiogram pathology (SPG)

Factors affecting SPG:

  • internal (genetic and immunological factors, congenital developmental defects of the genital organs, hormonal disorders, undescended testicles, sperm production disorders, etc.)
  • exogenous (disturbed environment by exhalations, chemicalization - insecticides, herbicides, pesticides; radioactive and microwave radiation, heavy metals; civilization influences - lifestyle, smoking, obesity, drugs, ...)
