What Is IVF with Own Eggs?
IVF with your own eggs is a form of in vitro fertilization in which your eggs are retrieved and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryo can then be transferred to your uterus. At Repromedica, every IVF treatment plan is based on your hormone levels, ovarian reserve, and medical history—not on a standard template. On this page, you’ll learn how IVF with your own eggs works, who it’s suitable for, and what happens during each stage, including IVF for older women.
Foreign patients are very welcome at our clinic. If you're traveling to Slovakia for IVF from abroad, your IVF journey will be managed by a coordinator who speaks your native language or English, and who will support you together with our experienced medical team throughout the whole process — from your initial consultation to your pregnancy test.

Who Is This Treatment Suitable For?
IVF with your own eggs may be an option when your ovarian reserve, age and overall reproductive health indicate a reasonable chance of obtaining suitable eggs for treatment. It is a common IVF treatment for:
- blocked, damaged or absent fallopian tubes
- male-factor infertility, including low sperm count or motility
- endometriosis affecting fertility
- polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and irregular ovulation
- unexplained infertility after other treatments haven't worked
- women who want a genetic connection to their child and for whom treatment with their own eggs is medically appropriate
Before choosing a protocol, your Repromedica specialist assesses your individual suitability for treatment based on your age, medical and reproductive history, hormone tests such as AMH and FSH, an ultrasound antral follicle count and other relevant findings.
How Does the IVF Treatment Process Work?
An IVF cycle with your own eggs usually takes 30 to 50 days from the first injection to the pregnancy test. For most patients, IVF treatment follows the same core steps:
Medical history & mandatory examinations
Before treatment begins, our medical team reviews your medical history and the results of your mandatory examinations to confirm that IVF treatment and egg retrieval can be performed safely.
Ovarian stimulation
Daily hormone injections for 8–12 days encourage multiple eggs to mature. We monitor your progress with ultrasound and blood tests.
Trigger shot
A trigger injection supports the final maturation of the eggs and is given at a precisely scheduled time, usually around 36 hours before egg retrieval.
Egg retrieval
During a short procedure under anesthesia or sedation, follicular fluid is aspirated from the ovaries and the retrieved eggs are identified in the laboratory.
Fertilization
The eggs are fertilized either by standard IVF insemination or by ICSI, where a single sperm is injected directly into each suitable mature egg.
Embryo culture
The fertilized eggs are cultured in the laboratory and their development is monitored for up to five or six days, depending on the treatment plan.
Embryotransfer
A selected embryo is transferred into the uterus through a thin catheter. The procedure is usually quick and does not require anesthesia.
Luteal support and pregnancy test
Hormone support continues for around two more weeks, until a blood test confirms the result.
How to Prepare for IVF
Before IVF treatment begins, you'll have a consultation covering your medical history, previous pregnancies or losses, and any earlier fertility treatment. We tailor the list of examinations to your history, but typical preparation includes:
We ask patients to stop smoking, limit alcohol and caffeine and, where possible, start taking folic acid at least three months before IVF treatment. If you're traveling from abroad, we plan your local monitoring and your visits to Bratislava so that stimulation and egg retrieval fit around your schedule as smoothly as possible.
Age and IVF: Realistic Expectations
Age is one of the most important factors affecting the success of IVF with your own eggs, particularly because the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities in eggs increases with a woman's age. Ovarian reserve also tends to decline with age, although individual differences are considerable.
IVF with your own eggs may still be possible at an advanced reproductive age, but success rates decline substantially as age increases. Your specialist will discuss your individual prognosis with you based on your age, ovarian reserve, medical history, ultrasound findings and, where relevant, your response to previous fertility treatment. In some situations, treatment with donor eggs may offer a higher chance of success.
IVF with Own Eggs for Women with Low AMH
A low AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) result means that fewer eggs are likely to be retrieved in a cycle — but on its own it doesn't mean poor egg quality or no chance of pregnancy. Many women with low AMH conceive with IVF using their own eggs, often with a protocol adjusted specifically for a lower expected number of eggs.
For women with low AMH, we select the stimulation protocol individually according to age, ovarian reserve, previous response to stimulation and other clinical factors. In selected cases, your specialist may also consider collecting eggs or embryos over more than one cycle before transfer. The aim is to choose the approach that suits your individual situation, rather than simply aiming for the highest possible number of eggs.
Some patients also ask about ovarian rejuvenation. These are emerging approaches being studied in women with diminished ovarian reserve or advanced reproductive age. Evidence on whether they can improve IVF outcomes is still developing, so their suitability, potential benefits and limitations are best discussed individually with a specialist.
Success Rates for IVF with Own Eggs
IVF success rates can be reported using various metrics, such as the clinical pregnancy rate or the live birth rate. Results vary depending on age, ovarian reserve, previous treatment, and the cause of infertility. Overall success rates in the general population provide useful context, but your individual prognosis depends on several factors, including age, the number of antral follicles, AMH levels, medical history, and response to stimulation. We will discuss these factors with you before treatment begins. Below you will find the success rates of IVF using your own eggs at Repromedic over the past two years, broken down by age group.

How Much Does IVF with Own Eggs Cost?
The cost of IVF treatment depends on the protocol, the medication dose your body needs, and whether additional lab techniques such as ICSI or extended embryo culture are included. As a private IVF clinic in Bratislava, we offer both separate IVF + ICSI services and IVF with own eggs packages.
For many patients considering IVF abroad, the price of IVF treatment in Slovakia compares favorably with the UK, Ireland and much of Western Europe, with no difference in protocol quality.
